The Value of an Internship versus a Job

Whenever you are confronted with the choice of taking an unpaid internship over a paid job in your field, it is important to weigh the differences between long-term investments provided through interning and the short-term paycheck offered in the paid job.
Whenever you are confronted with the choice of taking an unpaid internship over a paid job in your field, it is important to weigh the differences between long-term investments provided through interning and the short-term paycheck offered in the paid job.

Majority of internships are not paid which can make someone think internships are of no value because there will be nothing in the bank to prove it. Although, a student job only lasts for a limited or specified amount of time, internship is always long-term investment in your career that can eventually lead to a happy and smooth career life.
Following are long-term benefits of internships which can be the best option for you in the long run:
  1. You are going to have the vital opportunity to develop relationships with executives and leaders that may help you further in your choice of career. With outstanding skills and work ethics, you will have an advantage over your colleagues.
  2. Compensation may not be financial, but perhaps in the form of living allowance if it takes place in a different location, or school credit.
  3. You will be able to receive valuable training from top professionals that will groom you for a future full-time job at any choice of company.
  4. You have the great opportunity to be monitored and observed during the job and receive feedbacks from prospective employer within the site of your internship.
  5. You are going to have a personal experience of what the company is all about.
A major difference between an internship and a job is that the focus of internship is mainly to train you in skills you will need to take a particular role at any organization. Internships are often done under professional evaluation and supervision; you are going to learn through a proven scheme of learning. You are going to train under an environment that will attract both praises and criticisms that will set you on the right path to your desired career. In contrast, a job may provide you with a short-term training but after that, you are on your own.
Earning sustainable income to take care of bills while in college is crucial to everyone, but do not make the mistake of forgetting to observe the big picture. Some part-time jobs might be fun and offer short-term benefits, but they won’t make you a potential candidate for a full-time job. To get the most out of internship, treat it like it is a real job and you will survive to reap the fruits in the end.
